Sticks Downey started innocently enough, born of the results of my tinkering with Garageband and my roommate's Roland SP-303 sampler. CAC was at a standstill, and and some point I became reinvigorated with the prospect of stacking some tracks together and rapping over the results.
When Biff made his move to AZ, it sealed the deal. I decided to set out on my own, though I had no idea where I was going. I bought myself an SP-404, rigged up a ramshackle recording setup, and I was off. Talik and I had collaborated on numerous projects in the past, and he remains one of the only people (other than Biff, but we share a considerable amount of DNA) with whom I can make music and not want to choke. Foots was the wild card, a friend of a friend who shares many of my influences and is one of the most creatively abstract people I know.
I spent the next year and a half cutting and pasting, writing and recording, working and reworking. I make the tracks, Talik does his thing (which is integral to the sounds that we spout), and Footsy has the unenviable job of singing along with me. She's a trooper. We finished recording our full-length in the summer of '08, and after some unexpectedly lengthy post-production sessions, it's finally here. It's called When the Belt Changes Hands, and it's the first official Sly Records release in many a moon.
We're currently putting together the follow-up, which is set to be released in 2011.
